FAQs
Everything You Need to Know Before You Board

Planning your first rail journey through Europe raises plenty of questions. We have answered the most common ones below, drawing on fifteen years of curating journeys across the continent.

Do I need to book rail tickets in advance?

For high-speed and international services such as the Eurostar, TGV, Frecciarossa and ICE, we recommend booking as early as three months ahead to secure the best fares and preferred seating. Regional and slower routes can typically be booked on the day, offering greater flexibility for spontaneous travel.

Yes. Many international routes issue a single through-ticket across borders, and a Eurail or Interrail pass covers travel across up to 33 European countries under one document.

Most operators allow two large suitcases and one piece of hand luggage per passenger at no charge. Overhead racks and dedicated luggage bays are available in every carriage, and porters are on hand at major stations such as Paris Gare de Lyon and Roma Termini.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is standard on premium services including Eurostar, TGV INOUI, Frecciarossa, and Deutsche Bahn ICE. Signal quality can vary through tunnels and mountainous regions, so we suggest downloading essentials before departure.

Platforms are displayed on station departure boards approximately twenty minutes before departure. Your carriage number is printed on your ticket and shown on illuminated signs along the platform, guiding you to the correct doors before boarding.

European operators offer partial or full refunds for significant delays, typically from 60 minutes onwards. Our rail experts monitor every journey we arrange and will proactively rebook you onto the next available service should disruption occur.

Late spring and early autumn offer the finest balance of mild weather, quieter carriages, and dramatic seasonal landscapes. Winter rail journeys through the Alps are exceptional, while summer brings vibrant coastal routes along the Mediterranean.
